Academic Career and growing as a humanitarian employee

Abed was born into the rich Hasan family in Baniachong, Bengal Presidency, British India (now in Habiganj, Sylhet Division, Bangladesh). He passed the matriculation examination from Pabna Zilla School and went on to finish his higher secondary education from Notre Dame College, Dhaka.

In 1954, Abed left home at the age of eighteen to attend the University of Glasgow, where, in an effort to break away from tradition and do one thing radically different, he studied naval architecture. He realized there was very little work in shipbuilding in the People's Republic of Bangladesh and a career in naval architecture would build returning home difficult. with that in mind, Abed joined the chartered Institute of Management Accountants in London, finishing his professional education in 1962.

Abed came back to the People's Republic of Bangladesh (now Bangladesh) to join the Shell oil company and quickly rose to go its finance division. His time at Shell exposed Abed to the inner workings of a large conglomerate and provided him with insight into company management, which would become valuable to him later in life.

It was throughout his time at Shell that the devastating cyclone of 1970 hit the south and south-eastern coastal regions of the country, killing 300,000 people. The cyclone had a profound impact on Abed. within the face of such devastation, he said the comforts and perks of a company executive's life ceased to have any attraction for him. in conjunction with friends, Abed created help, a company that provided relief and rehabilitation to the worst affected within the island of Manipura, that had lost three-quarters of its population within the disaster.

Soon after, Bangladesh's own struggle for independence from West Pakistan began and circumstances forced Abed to go away the country. He found refuge within the UK, wherever he set up Action Bangladesh to lobby the governments of Europe for his country's independence.

Formation of BRAC (the largest non-governmental organization of Bangladesh)

When the war ended in Dec 1971, Abed sold his flat in London and came back to the recently independent Bangladesh to find his country in ruins. additionally, many refugees who had wanted shelter in India during the war had begun to come home. Their relief and rehabilitation needed very urgent efforts, and Abed determined to use the funds he had generated from selling his flat to initiate his own such organization to contend with the long-term task of raising the living conditions of the rural poor. He has chosen wisely the remote region of Sulla in northeastern Bangladesh to start out his work, and this work led to the non-governmental organization called BRAC in 1972.

Although the name 'BRAC' doesn't represent a form, the organization was once known as the  Rehabilitation help Committee so as the Bangladesh Rural Advancement Committee.

In a span of only 3 decades, BRAC has mature to become one in every of the most important development organizations within the world in terms of the size and diversity of its interventions. As BRAC grew, Abed ensured that it continues to focus on the landless poor, particularly girls, a large percentage of whom live below the poverty level with very little or no access to resources or typical development efforts.

BRAC currently operates all told sixty-four districts of Bangladesh through development interventions that vary from education, healthcare, microfinance, skills, human rights, agriculture, and enterprise development. it's currently considered the most important non-profit in the world – both by staff and people served.
